The state government has been tough on child marriage. The arrests were made on February 3 on the directive of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma.
The Chief Minister said all those involved in child marriage will be arrested. "Thousands of people involved in child marriage will be arrested from tomorrow. Those who marry girls under the age of 18 will be arrested within the next six or seven days," he said.
He added that any person who marries a girl under the age of 14 will be arrested under the Pokcho Act. The Chief Minister sought the cooperation of the people of Assam in preventing child marriage.
"The Assam government is committed to curbing child marriage in the state. So far, 4,004 cases have been registered across the state. Action on the cases will start from February 3. I urge everyone to cooperate," Sharma tweeted.
According to the Chief Minister, Dhubri district has the highest number of cases registered (370) and Hailakandi district has the lowest number (1).
In other districts, 123 cases were registered in Bangagaon, 35 in Kachar, 125 in Darang, 75 in Dibrugarh, 157 in Goalpara, 255 in Hojai, 80 in Kamrup, 204 in Kokrajhar, 113 in Nagaon, 224 in Morigaon and 110 in Tamulpur.
